Nude #653 - original watercolor nude by Gretchen Kelly

12" x 16" watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper

This is from last Tuesday night. It's from a 25 minute pose.
Tomorrow is another night of figure painting, which I look forward to each week. I usually do about 12 - 20 paintings in the 3 hour session....always enough to post all week long. I will, often add color or accents to the background through the course of the week.

One minute pose series XXX.1,2,3 - original quick pose paintings by Gretchen Kelly

XXX.1

XXX.2

XXX.3

9" x 12" - gouache + graphite on paper

When I am painting the one minute poses as the session starts, I have different papers prepared that I grab as the quick poses change. Sometimes I do them all the same color and then other times I change colors as I did here. The other one minute poses are on pale grey, which I will show on another post.

Nude #652 - original water nude by Gretchen Kelly

12" x 16" watercolor + graphite on paper

This painting is from a 15 minute pose. I like the simplicity of this. Sometimes you have to know when to stop. I stopped painting before the pose ended because I knew that I had to stop right at this point.

Nude #651- original watercolor gesture nude by Gretchen Kelly

9" x 12" watercolor + gouache on paper

Often the best paintings of nudes are poses from the back. I always love them. I have many that I have done over the years of the same models over + over and they never are the same and I never tire of them.

Nude #649 - original watercolor nude by Gretchen Kelly

13"x17" watercolor + graphite on paper
-from last night's session out in the farmlands of Germantown. 6 of us painting + drawing in Mary's barn. We are silent when we paint. The soundtrack from "Amelie" was playing. It is a favorite of the model, Suzy. She makes copies for all of us. It was so transcendent in the quiet with the music and loud birds squawking outside in the trees, the breeze was clicking the leaves on trees and then some rain chimed in...it was an orchestra of natural harmony in the night.

Nude #648 - original watercolor nude by Gretchen Kelly

19" x 25" watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper
This was the last pose that I painted this evening after doing a total of about 16 paintings from the live model poses. The summer session started at my friend Mary's barn in the middle of the farmland of Germantown. We are a small group and I look forward to getting together each week in the summer. At the end of the summer we have a beautiful, bountiful dinner together to celebrate the end of the season. This is the third summer we are doing this. We are so grateful to Mary for holding the sessions at her barn because the regular sessions at the Hudson Opera House are not in session during the summer.

Nude #647 - original watercolor nude by Gretchen Kelly

15" x 20" watercolor, gouache, graphite + gold leaf on paper

I feel like I am going through a door and on the other side is a new place that I haven't been to before. It's a transition. I feel the need to paint much bigger - that's going to change my prices. I feel like simplifying. I feel like focusing on color and form. I know I am going to put as much energy into my landscapes as I do my figurative works. Where is the time going to come from? I still have to work doing design work to make a living....hmmmm ---just have to do the next thing I guess and see what happens.

See "another LOOK"

I wanted to inform all my Art patrons that only look at this blog, to sign up to receive posts on my other blog: "anotherLOOK". This other blog is where I have been posting landscapes-it is the new site for all non-figurative Artwork - just in case you didn't know....
I accidently posted this landscape below, so I thought I would take advantage of it to make a note about the other blog. I am trying to build up that mailing list. You can always click on the link on the side to get there also.

Gold on the Horizon - original watercolor landscape by Gretchen Kelly

9.5" x 12" watercolor, graphite + gold leaf on paper
This is my favorite farm site to paint. There is so much sky and land that hold the set of barns and a windmill. You can't see the windmill in this painting but I have done it many times before. I took a lot of photos here yesterday when the cloud formations were amazingly dramatic. I have lots of picture reference for new landscapes. I am back to doing watercolors with metallic leaf.

One minute pose series XXIX.1-6 -original sketches by Gretchen Kelly

One minute pose series XXIX.1,2,3,4,5,6 - watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper
(see new versions on my Etsy shop)
These were done a few weeks ago. I always have some gesture poses on hand to post when I am too burnt to make a new painting during the day. I actually have been making Art all day. In class with the kids I made funny puppet heads and then I went on to designing some patio furniture. But I am pooped now and must stop for the day. I probably will do some kids portraits tomorrow.

Colorful Hands - original portrait by Gretchen Kelly

7.5" x9.5" watercolor + graphite on paper
SOLD

Two kids with hands in paint... The kids love to feel paint on their hands. One kid will start by painting his/her hand, then he/ looks at it, then she/he figures out that he/she can place it on the wall or a paper or just keep going from one project to the next with a colorful hand. Quickly there will be another kid with her hands in the jar feeling the paint like cutie-pie Kate in this picture.

Art Patrons come for a visit

Meet two of my collectors who came all the way from Maryland to meet me last Sunday: Pat + Doreen. They also purchased quite a few of my nudes for which they had been in search of and that is how they found me- on the internet awhile ago, in their search. A couple of weeks ago when I published my recent postcard for the landscape show that I am in with other DP members (Jamie Grossman, Jan Blencowe + Takeyce Walter), Pat wanted to come to see that and have a studio tour at the same time of his visit. I was up for that and where I live has so much to offer people from out of the area to tootle around and see in this Hudson River Valley. Then we went out to a wonderful lunch and had much to talk about. Pat is an engineer who works with NASA scientists on projects related to weather. A part of his work he makes creative power point presentations and always includes Artwork in his presentations to create a visual memory for the scientists who he is presenting to- NO! not nudes! He has presented some very fun and creative ideas for me to collaborate on with him where Art + Science meet. I was so amped up from our meeting filled to the brim with ideas. I am going to start off working on a logo image for him that is from satelite imagery.

A side note:
You never know who you are going to meet and what it can lead to in the uncharted new landscape of Art on the internet.....I for one, have met quite a few interesting people. Some online through words, some on phone and some in person. All have been adventures that have filled my life in unexpected ways and I have some very colorful stories to tell and some that I won't tell.... ;)

Princess Painting - original watercolor portrait by Gretchen Kelly

4.5" x 6.5" - watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper

At paperscissorsOranges, there is always a "castle" for the kids to paint. The other day when I snapped this picture, there was a princess painting the castle. The castle was made by me and it's really supposed to be a fancy barn. Through the years at PSO, there have been many architectural structures, contemporary sculptures and undefinable constructions that have taken on layers and layers of paint. I have photographed many of them through time. In fact, on my other blog- www.gksuniverse.blogspot.com - you can see one that I reviewed last December.

Papa + Son - original watercolor portrait by Gretchen Kelly

4.5" x 6.5" watercolor

Here is Papa + son standing side by side. I have picked many photos from my Susanna's collection which appeal to me and there are a lot. I like this portrait of the two standing in a corner space that seems to hold them suspended in time. It is as though the camera was a stun gun and froze them forever in time. I know Susa would like them to stay this age forever- both of them.

paperscissorsOranges - Original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

8" x 24" - watercolor on paper
This is the beginning of a series of paintings that I will continue through the end of July - on + off through the weeks. It is a collection of multi- media paintings of the joy in the kids art studio where I work each week. I work 3 days a week at paperscissorsOranges . My dear, dearest friend, Susanna, is closing her business after 9 years. She wants a break and to spend more time with her family. Her family is growing. There's another person growing in her tummy, her second child. She will open again in a few years and make a fresh start with part II of PSO. I have enjoyed working there throughout the years. It is pure pleasure and inspiration for me. I love the color explosions - literally with the cotton balls loaded with color thrown onto the wall that is a constantly changing mural. I get to build houses from cardboard boxes that the kids paint everyday with new color. I mix colorful paints, cut, glue, set up, break down and more, more, more- so you will get a taste of the place these last coupla months. The paintings will be displayed on the waiting room walls as a collection to view until the end of July. They are for sale and I will be taking commission assignments from these works. Families, individual portraits, pets, interiors of homes can be customized for a buyer. Commissions are a business I have wanted to develop in my work - and now is the perfect time.

$400.
