Bedroom alight - original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

8.5"x 11" - watercolor - SOLD to a collector in Ca.

With my camera, I captured the light in each room of Susanna's house in the morning when it enters through the windows creating light boxes on the floors. This room was spectacular in it's simplicity.

Orange sky at Olana - original oil painting by Gretchen Kelly

5"x7" - oil on canvas

For price: EMAIL ME!

The sky was sherbet orange over purple mountains majesties... I wonder if it is really true that the Catskill mountains inspired the lyrics to this nation's song?
(just looked up "America the Beautiful in Wiki- the Catskills did not inspire the lyrics of "purple mountains majesties" but in my mind they are just that: "America the Beautiful"

Red Barn + Berkshires - original oil painting by Gretchen Kelly

10" x 11" - oil on wood
SOLD to a collector in Ct.
Today's landscape was done plein air at Olana. This is looking east towards the Berkshire mountains. It was one of those ideal days for being out doors. There are several trails to walk and find the perfect spot to paint or have a look across the Hudson River towards the Catskills. I did 3 paintings today and was out there for 12 hours until sundown! - never did that before.
It was a treat today to be joined by other Daily Painters, Jamie William Grossman and Tilly Strauss. I had met Tilly before along with Takeyce Walters this past winter in Rhinebeck, but it was the first time meeting Jamie. Jamie shared much of her vast wisdom about the tricks of trade on being a Plein Air Artist. She is a wiz at making everything easier to carry and set up outdoors and I will be following some of those tips for making a lightweight foam core box for all my supplies including folding containers for water, folding chairs with carrying case, umbrella and much more. THANKS, Jamie!

Two Turquoise Lamps -original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

SOLD to a collector in Florida

8"x8" - watercolor + gouache

The light streaming in through this window onto the desk and through the turquoise glass base of the lamp is hypnotic to me. I always go for the dreamy highlights of interiors. Oh, and are those GKelly originals on that desk?

Orange Lamp - original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

8.5" x 11" - watercolor
Susanna's home is filled with sunlit windows throwing shadows across the rooms and onto the white painted floors. This old farmhouse has beautiful bones. The details in corners, through doorways and down hallways reveal the past and hold your attention....more to come......

Moon over the Berkshires - original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

watercolor + gold leaf on paper - 8.5"x 11"

Here is another view of the Strawberry moon rendered in gold metalic leaf. It is looking east over the Bershire mountains. I was taken by the arrangement the branches at the top of this painting and how they create a vignet.
Addendum: for those that receive my post via subscription email- note that I have changed the pic in this blog. I neglected to add in the BERKSHIRE MOUNTAINS to the first posted painting. I am a bit tired and it's it is what I intended.
SOLD to a collector in the Hudson Valley

Strawberry Moonrise from Olana - original oil painting by Gretchen Kelly

9"x 10" - oil on wood block
The June full moon is referred to as the Strawberry moon or Rose moon. The term comes from the short season of harvesting strawberries. It was a lovely find for me to read about this and to have actually seen the moon in a strawberry blonde color.

Red Barns + Moonrise - original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

SOLD to a collector in Ca.
I went out to take pics of the sunset at around 8:30 last night and was surprized by this beautiful 98% waxing moon saying hello to me and winking whilst knowing my attention had been stolen away from the sunset over the Catskills. I had not been paying attention to its cycle this past month and it sprung up on me. The moon was actually a light lemony- tangerine color, but that isn't how it showed up in my pictures. I 'll do another painting showing the actual color of the moon tomorrow.

Pebble Beach View - original pastel by Gretchen Kelly

This is a view of the cove where much swimming and painting are done by the visitors to Monhegan Island. Needless to say I am not usually swimming because the water is so-o-o cold.

"North up Rte. 7"- original oil painting by Gretchen Kelly

11"x14" - oil on canvas
This is a painting I did quite a while ago that I just came across and wanted to post. It is good filler today because I did not have a chance to do a new painting for this blog, instead I was painting designs for ceramic dinnerware and trying to meet a deadline for which I have been working towards for the last two months. Finally, I am done and hope to devote some real quality time to painting at the end of this week. I have one more deadline that must get finished this week and that is the DOG - the DOG - the DOG - the last and final dog. I will post those final pics at the end of the week along with some upcoming photos that promise to be funny- I will be in Hudson's Flag Day parade on a DOG float with DOGs and other Artists.

"Aqua lit window" Original watercolor painting by Gretchen Kelly

The light that comes through this bedroom window is tinted a beautiful aqua by the sheer chiffon curtain. It blows in the breeze and in the hot summer when the window is open the neighborhood sounds like it's in my bedroom. (Not everything is perfect).

"Nude #380" original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

I was waiting for a color to come to me for the background and it did. BEAN GREEN! Just like the baby is referred to at this stage. Everyone who is awaiting the arrival of him/her refer to the babe as "Bean". It's my favorite color too and perfect for a new sprout bursting into the world at this time of year.

"Afternoon window" - original watercolor by Gretchen Kelly

8.5"x11"- watercolor + gouache
I am painting my home to see it painted on paper, through my Artistic window. I always love looking through windows. I am removed and metaphorically desirous of what is on the other side. It is my dream on the other side.

This bedroom painting is a complete diversion. It has been in the back of my mind to do a series of interiors. I especially like the way light filters through windows.

Red Barn + windmill at sunset - 8.5"x11"- watercolor, graphite

SOLD to a collector in California
The orange orb setting over the Catskills illuminates and shades all at once. In the shadow appears the detail emerging to outline a windmill and dark forms of a barn. This spring view, again, is one of the same that I did this past winter. See below....

Two Red Barns + windmill in Spring- 8.5"x11" - watercolor + graphite

I have been hungry for the Red Barns in the Spring landscape. I'm scouting around and snapping away. One hand on the wheel and one out the window with the camera. Some of the new series will show previous barns from the winter series - now sans blanc and all dressed in Spring GREEN. I love GREEN. It is the color of growth, sprouting, fresh newness, it should be my middle name. I also love RED, aqua and ORANGE. I love colors - they excite me and heal me and make me happy.... lalalalalalalala....
