Nude #348 - 18"x24" - watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

I am back to putting a stencil wallpaper patterns in my backgrounds. I have new inspiration and color ideas. I love the outlet I have designing my own wallpaper patterns in my paintings. It will probably be the next commercial design endeavor for moi....sometime in the future.

Nudes -18"x24" -one minute poses #1-#8

I paint a series of ten one minute poses in the beginning of our figure drawing session. I have been focusing on refining my gestural lines by using india ink and brush. It is unforgiving and gives me the challenge and practice of having courage to make my mark. The paintings measure 18"x24". It is very good practice for me and I thought I would show the good, the bad, but not the ugly, which I have spared the viewer from (maybe another time for that).
If you are interested in purchasing any of these singularly or as a group.

    Nude #346

watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper
Here is that color combo I am into: orange + aqua. When I was painting this particular pose, I was annoyed that from where I sat, in the room at the opera house that holds the sessions, the model was in complete shade. But somehow I made it work so that she stands in the shadow but her form is visible and there is the accent edge of highlight.

    Nude #345

19"x25" - watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

I painted this nude on orange paper. I wanted an under-color to influence the feeling of this painting. I am obsessed with orange and turquoise, aqua + teal as a combination.

    Nude #344

SOLD to a collector in Va.

18"x24" - ink painting on paper

This painting is of a one minute pose, which is part of ten done in a series, that we do to warm up at the beginning of the session. Then we go into five minute poses and onto 15 minutes and arriving at 25 minute poses of which we do about three 'til the end of class.

    Nude #343

11.5"x15.5" - watercolor, gouache, graphite on 400 lb paper treated with pumice
This was a study that I liked but it needed some decorative element to compliment the colors of this nude. I wanted to keep the natural edges in tact and that quick gesture feeling.

    Spring Equinox moon setting

8.5"x11" - watercolor, gouache, pastel on paper
Early two days ago in the morning I awoke out of a deep sleep without an alarm. Unusual, but timely to catch the last bit of the moon as it sunk behind the clouds and the Catskill mountains. I was witness to the Rousseau clouds that held the highlights making painterly outlines against the indigo universe. I had been wanting to capture this kind of moonlit sky for sometime. Finally I could see it with my eyes and not my mind's eye.

    Spring Equinox Full Moon

8.5"x11" - watercolor, gouache, silver leaf on paper
Last night's full moon rising over houses on State St. in Hudson, NY. Everything was that twilight blue. Is it really Spring?

    Nude #342

19"x25" - watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper
Sometimes the stencil backgrounds create a needed element to the composition. Not only does it add to the painting, it diverts attention away from some aspects that are not perfected. As always I love the contrast of the quick lines and brush strokes in the figure contrasted with the organization and regularity of the repeated wallpaper pattern in the background.

    Nude #341

    18"x24" - ink on paper

This sketch is from a one minute pose. It expresses the feeling of flight, of freedom, of lift-off. As we approach the Spring this weekend.... don't you just want to fly like a bird towards the sun for some warmth? I do!

    Nude #340

19"x25" - watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper
This is a 25 minute pose. I am very rusty and trying to get back into the natural groove of doing figure painting. I seem to be getting more abstract with these nudes. I am starting in the middle and working out to the edges. I always start with a sketch in paint. I go for the gesture in a neutral shade of wash then add the lights, then add the cools or the hots then add the darks. I add the graphite lines at the end for definition. Usually an Artist will work the other way around and do the sketch first in graphite, then add the paint.

    Poppies + Fern

SOLD to a collector in Canada
11.5"x18" - watercolor + gouache on Arches paper

These flowers are from my favorite floral shop at Takashimaya in NYC. I always stop in there when I'm uptown for inspiration. I could not resist these bursting buds - like teenagers ready to pop. I will continue to paint them through the course of the week as they morph into adult poppy heads. I like the way the ferns off-set the boldness of the flowers with the delicate filagree leaves.

    Nude #332

    18"x24" - watercolor
I am back to figure painting at the Hudson Opera House! It's been about 3 months and I have been anxious to get back to doing some free style fauvist nudes. So here we go, starting tonight...
