Red barns + 3 silos - 7.5"x22" - watercolor, graphite + encaustic wax on paper

It is never ending, the different ways that I can compose the space and render the different aspects of this scene. Today I have used the encaustic wax to create the snow and it really gives the texture of it in a subtle way. The fence is rendered with carving into the wax surface and it is impressionistic. The trees are lacey graphite filigree over the silhouettes of watercolor. I am using tons of white on top + bottom to hold the center in focus.

Red barn + Red mend - 8"x23" watercolor + gouache on paper

This is the long view of the parts I painted in previous days. This landscape offers a multitude of beautiful scenes to paint. There are still more to come from this one setting.

Red barn + silo - 7.5"x15.5" watercolor, gouache, graphite on Arches 300 lb cold press

The winter colors seem dull until you look closer. Naked black branches against the white sky are halo-ed with magenta. The distant tree line is lavender fading into the horizon. The red barns show off their geometry against the white backdrop.

Red barn + windmill - 11"x14.5" - watercolor + gouache on Arches cold press

The white snow continues to magnify the intensity of the red that I am seeing in the winter landscapes. I am inspired as I drive through the scenery. My eyes seek to find red daily as I continue this theme.

Winter Orchards - 11"x14.5" watercolor, pastel + graphite on Arches

The colors that are revealed by the wet snow in winter months are worthy of many paintings from this Artist. It is not my favorite time of year but the quiet landscapes that I see as I drive on back farm roads is always inspiring and filled with discovery for me.

Control tower- 6.5"x9.5" - gouache + pencil on paper

ABOVE: Here is what I think I look like through the course of my day.
For those looking at this blog, today I am taking you on a studio tour. On the Daily Painters Gallery website all the Artists are taking you on studio tours so check it out by clicking to the right on the site and enjoy! It should be a good trip.

BELOW: This is my "D'sign" studio where I mostly do my "job". I design dinnerware, giftware and home decor items. Most of the designs are for ceramics which I paint on paper with gouache and they are produced in factories in China. So here you see the "headquarters" for where it all starts.

BELOW: .... in my other painting studio. Yeah, I am fortunate to have enough space for a couple of studios. Lots of space is important to me. Here is where most of my daily paintings are done. My gelatin monoprints, watercolors, encaustic wax medium, collages and everything else including sewing gets done here.
This space also doubles as a sewing room and triples as a guest room and a den for my two cats, Botero and Beardsley.
Hope you enjoyed the tour and come back again! Soon, like everyday to see my work which is for sale too. Send me an email with the title and I will quote you a price.

Snow cloud over sea - 8"x13" gelatin monoprint with ink + pastel on paper

One of the fun things about doing these gelatin monoprints is the lack of control. This was a summer sea scene originally done in Maine on Deer Isle. Awaiting the opportunity to come out, this print found a new life. The imperfections created by the dimples on the gelatin plate that did not print took on the look of snow flakes - how perfect! This could be modified to fit into my winter scene series. I like the twist this print has taken.

Pine Boughs of Snow - 8"x12" gelatin monoprint with ink on rice paper

This monoprint was done in Sept. and it was an impression I had of what was yet to be. It fits for today, we had our first big white snowfall here in my part of the Hudson Valley.

Olana Dusk - 6"x24" - watercolor, gouache, silverleaf on paper

SOLD
Here is the famous view that many a plein air painter perches to paint. But not me in the cold! I'll take the photo and paint in the warmth of my humble studio. This was dusk tonight at approximately 5 o'clock. I am fortunate to live so close to this wondrous view that is ever changing. It is never dull.

Catskill Sunset- 10.5"x14" watercolor, pastel + gold leaf on Arches 300 lb

This is a landscape overlooking the Hudson river. It is the same view as yesterday's but zoomed out. I used neon pastel oil color on the halo edge of the mountains for dramatic effect. It is over-emphasized but really shows the essence of what I saw.

Blowin' in the Wind- 12.5"x14.5"- gelatin monoprint with ink, pastel + graphite on paper

There are a lot of things goin' on in here- the breeze, the impression of the motion of the leaves fallin', the clouds marchin' by, the whirlin' dust comin' up from the ground and the strokes of my brush paintin' like van Gogh, filled with action - (GK, keep dreamin'..!)

Nude #326- 19.5x25.5"- watercolor, gouache, pastel + graphite on paper

Sometimes the colors become the focus in a painting. Sometimes the lack of color or the subtle use of color and the way it recedes into the paper keeps you staring. I was drawn into the void that this nude occupies by the hints of color which create the contours of Wendy.

Email me to purchase.

Nude #325- 23"x27.5" watercolor, gouache, pastel + graphite on paper

This painting is almost a mirror image of another that I did a few weeks ago. There is a lot of drama in the background which this particular model commands.
