"French Post Card" - 12.5"x14.5" gelatin monoprint with ink + graphite on paper

This is a daring try using this gelatin monoprint technique. I am using authentic French postcards as reference. In the 1800's these postcards were the Playboy magazine of their time... I find them to be inspiring and lovely and whimsical.

$100.

Rising moon at dusk - 9"x13"- watercolor, graphite + silver leaf on paper

I saw this moon rising at dusk yesterday. The sky was that beautiful color of periwinkle blue and pink. I like to put down an image of natural beauty from my memory because I filter the reality. The trees are lacey and they just tickle the edge of the moon as it rises above them. I did several versions of this image but this one looks the best.

Nude #324- 16.5"x28" - watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper

This model looks a little like Josephine Baker. I did this painting in August in the heat of the summer. For some reason I have been holding off posting it. On a lazy day like today when I did not finish a painting it comes in tres handy- voila!

Icey Grass on Deer Isle- 12"x12" gelatin monoprint

This is part of my series from a workshop I took at Haystack on Deer Isle in Maine, this past fall. The icey looking grass effect in the foreground was achieved by using grass as a mask on top of the gelatin plate. There are so many effects that can be achieved doing this printing technique.

Nude #323- 6"x12" - watercolor,gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

I never get tired of this reclining pose. It is the most attractive and alluring poses that a model can strike, and the viewer can be captured by.

Nude #322- 19.5"x25.5" mixed media on paper

This is a combination of acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pastel and graphite on paper. The background is a silvery metalic that goes from dark to light pushing the figure and the chair forward. It is more dramatic in person.

Nude #321 + Nude #312

Nude #321 - 18" x 24" ink + gouache on paper
This is from a one minute pose. I have been painting one minute poses using india ink and a China brush. I am trying to capture the gesture with the paint as opposed to charcoal in this quick window of time.

Nude #312
19" x 25" watercolor, gouache + graphite
I am re-posting this painting after taking down for awhile. I could not put it back upon it's original post date because you can't time travel on blogger. So he is piggybacking on this post post from the same week, same model session.

Nude #319-16"x20"- mixed media on paper + wood

belongs to a collector in Hudson, NY

This is a big combo of mediums and layering of imagery.I mounted the nude, done on paper, onto a silver leaf covered wood board. Then I added the background setting later, as usual. I wanted to layer in some stencils and just kept playing with colors and foreground and background. It looks better in person rather than this photo. I am just going with the flow here and it is taking me on a trip somewhere Across the Universe - not sure where yet. Getting free-er is where I am always trying to go go go.

Nude #318- 18"x24"- watercolor, gouache, graphite on paper

I have been studying this nude on my wall for a long time thinking about what I wanted to add in the background. I added the stencil of the water whirls because of the dreamy look on this model's face. And I created it in a Japanese feeling because of the tranquility that is present.

Nude #316- 19.5"x25.5"- watercolor, gouache, pastel+ graphite on paper

Tuesday night usually means nudes fresh off the easel:
Yup! This looks like a collage of patterns that I patched together. Her face is undetectable, her body folds get lost in the folds of the fabrics. I like the hodgepodge arrangement.

Maine View - 12"x12"- gelatin monoprint

This is a mixed medium using graphite with the inks. I created a branch where the gelatin plate was cracking. I am still getting the feel for how to use this new technique. It is new for me, although it has been in use for a few decades. It was invented by a very clever man whose name escapes me at the moment. But I'll get back to on that later....

Along the Five Mile River- 12"x15" gelatin monoprint + graphite on rice paper

The reference image that this is taken from is a watercolor landscape I did many years back. You can see the original on my website under landscapes. This doesn't compare but it has its own merits.

Nude#311- 18"x24" watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

I have been studying this painting for awhile trying to decide what background to add. Initially I painted the fabric she lays on a dark color. Didn't like it so I painted over in a lighter blue leaving the under painting showing as texture and shadow. Now it works well with the stencil.
