Spring Fever - 8"x11" gouache & pastel on board

Spring is my favorite time of year and I like to savour every last bit of it - til all the buds turn into flowers and the virgin green becomes ripe green. Yeah... I've got Spring Fever!

Nude #188 - 19"x25" watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

I have been studying Degas women and found that he used gouache and pastel to render many of them. The effects that he achieved with the colors were vibrant and enhanced the atmosphere for his ballerinas and other performers. I am inspired to do more of this mixture of mediums.

Nude #187- 19"x25" - watercolor, gouache, pastel & graphite on paper

At first, when I painted her, the colors became very muddy. There was no tension - nothing to draw your attention into the piece. I then thought to add the firey red to heat her up - to show her hot spots. I think it really worked. She's good to go now.

Nude #185 - 14"x24" watercolor, gouache & graphite on paper

This painting is fresh from my Tues. night figure drawing class- 25 minute pose. Rear views always ask questions - what does she look like? Is she asleep? What could she be dreaming about? Don't you want to know?

Nude #184 - 18"x24" - charcoal on newsprint

This nude sketch is from a series of fifteen - one minute poses that starts off the figure drawing class that I attend each week. Sometimes these are the strongest drawings because they are created with bold intentional swift strokes and less forethought.

Nude #183 -20"x27" - pastel, graphite, gouache, gold leaf on paper

Golden slumbers filled her eyes and she dreamed on some stockings- she used be Nude #172 - undressed. She has blossomed with the Spring.

Nude #179 - 19"x25" watercolor, gouache & graphite on paper

This model was the absolutely most beautiful ever. You can even see her transcending clear energy which she exuded and I believe I have captured. I was staring & staring at this when I got it home and wondering if I needed to add a stencil pattern or a swath of black contrast in the background. After a while it was clear - NO. This is all that she needs. She's perfect as is.

Looking 2 - 11"x12" encaustic wax & silver leaf on texture paper

I'm looking at you & you are looking at me. This paper is treated with pumice texture, and I have worked entirely with the wax to paint this portrait. NFS

Nude #173b - 22"x30" watercolor, gouache, graphite & wallpaper on paper

This is the same Nude #173 originally posted on April 4th. Now I have gone back into it and collaged vintage wallpaper on the floor. My 2-step process of going back into the nudes keeps it interesting for me. I knew I would be going back into the batch of nudes from my previous class.

Nude #177 - 19"x25" watercolor, gouache, pastel, graphite on paper

This nude is tatooed with paisley patterns and I could not leave it at just that. Sometimes I have to be mindless about what I am doing in order to see where I might be taken. Then I go to the next place, which is not somewhere expected. I feel I have won a prize when I get taken to those unknown places.

Nude #174 - 19"x25" watercolor, gouache, pastel & graphite on paper

The intensity of the color draws my eyes into this painting. I gaze longer thinking about what I can't see about her. I find that when looking at a nude from behind I want to know more.

Nude #173 - watercolor, pastel, gouache, graphite on paper

I like to get two paintings out of a one hour pose. This is the same pose that is seen in yesterdays post. This one has a lot of potential for me to get in and play with the background.

Nude #172 - 20"x27" pastel & graphite on paper

This nude is fresh from my life drawing class tonight. I will be posting what I call first drafts from tonights class for the next week. At a later date I will probably go back into each and add more color or pattern.

Nude #171 - 16"x20" wax, acrylic & gold leaf on wood

(Owned by my mother)
I am trying to achieve an effect with the gold leaf but have yet to get it. Sometimes the mistakes are how I get to where I am going. I will keep trying...
